Diary of the Dead
photo

Went to a screening at the Egyptian Theater for George Romero's latest zombie fest, DIARY OF THE DEAD. The place was packed and Romero was in good spirits. He looked cool with his ponytail, dark glasses and I love how he says "man" at the end of every other sentence.

An extra treat was John Landis moderating after the screening. He's a great storyteller and knows his shit. Altho at one point, Landis was trying to get the audience to recall the name of the movie where the characters reference the verite hit of 1960, MONDO CANE. Since nobody else spoke up, I shouted out "Medium Cool." Landis pointed at me and said, "Yeah, Medium Cool. That's very good. Thank you." "Thank you," I replied, cozy in my niche zone of film geek.

Thanks for adding to my barren comments section. I just noted yours hence my lateness.

The movie was disappointing. I love Romero and his offbeat vision, but the characters were weak, underdeveloped and the mash-up technique didn't work given its gloss. When the best thing in a Romero zombie film is a kick-ass Amish farmer, you're in trouble. But the last shot is powerful, if marred by that too-obvious narration.

As I'm sure you'll understand, I'll have to see it anyway as a Romero fan, but, as evidentally the only Romero fan who hated LAND, I'm going into this with reservations.
